Ceal Floyer is a British visual artist born in Pakistan in 1968. Berlin, Germany, is where she is based. Floyer continually incorporates technology, the ready-made, post-minimalism, conceptual art, and minimalism into her work. Her art is frequently praised for its aesthetic restraint, which contrasts sharply with the textual connotations that abound, and for how it encourages more speculation.

Although I personally don’t understand conceptual art, I like the simplicity of Floyer’s works. Her work is appealing to look at because it’s visually satisfying to watch and clean. One example of her work I liked is her installation “Double Act,2006”. A theatrical light with an attached gobo and slide is installed on a wall at a right angle to an adjacent wall, where the light projection is seen. It is set up as an installation in a darkened room. An image of a crimson theatre curtain and a white spotlight is projected onto the area using a gobo, a translucent filter that forms a light source like a stencil. The circle of light spilling onto the ground and the reflections and shadows add to the illusionism of the piece and provide the viewer immersive experience.
