Painting: Reflection

At the beginning of the painting task, I decided that I wanted to paint the first collage of my character next to the big violin. While I was sketching out the collage image, I changed my mind about drawing the exact collage image, and I wanted to challenge myself only to paint the background where I would imagine where my character would play the violin, which I decided would be a living room. For the painting, I wanted to paint using monochromatic shades of brown. Before starting to paint appropriately, I used a wash of watercolour on top of my sketch to knock out the white of the paper, and it also helped me get a rough idea of what types of browns I wanted to mix and use. Once I was done using the watercolour, I waited for it to dry and then began to add gouache on top. I wanted to use gouache because I like how smooth the paint goes on when getting a good water-to-paint balance, and it leaves a nice matte finish when painting. While painting, I tried not to put any pressure on how clean I wanted the finished product to look, and I just enjoyed mixing and adding different hues of browns in areas I saw the best fit in the space. One thing I learned while the painting was to try and trust the process, as I'm the type of person who would be hard on myself when something doesn't look good, despite how long I've been doing it. By not paying attention to how it looked at the start, the more I worked on it, I gradually saw the difference when I built up the layers, which came together nicely.
